One of the questions I get asked most is, “What should we wear?” — and it makes total sense. Outfits can completely change the way your images feel. You want them to look timeless, coordinated, and true to you.
As a photographer who loves capturing genuine connection and meaningful moments, I always recommend outfits that feel like you while also helping the images feel elevated and cohesive. Here are a few of my go-to styling tips to make sure your photos turn out beautifully.
Choose 2–3 colors that complement each other and your location. Think neutrals with subtle accents in earth tones (like cream, navy, olive, rust, or soft pastels). Avoid overly bright or neon colors that can distract from your connection and the natural light. For my editing style, I also recommend avoiding bright reds as they can color cast and create unflattering shadows.
You don’t want everyone in the exact same color. Instead, choose pieces that work well together. For example: a soft cream top, denim, and a muted mustard accent tied into a pattern or accessory. This creates depth and visual interest without being too “matchy-matchy.”
Textures like waffle knit, denim, linen, lace, and soft cotton add dimension to your images. Layers (like a cardigan, jacket, or scarf) not only make outfits look intentional but also give you variety in your photos without needing a full change.
Small, subtle patterns can be great— but large logos, bold graphics, or extremely busy prints can be distracting or unflattering. Solid colors or gentle prints keep the attention on your faces and connection.
Draw inspiration from where were shooting or the time of year. A flowy dress feels beautiful in a field at golden hour. Boots and earthy tones fit fall sessions perfectly. Light, airy fabrics work great at the beach. Choose outfits that feel natural to the setting.
Most importantly: wear something you feel like you in. If you’re tugging at your clothes or just uncomfortable, it’ll show in the images. Choose outfits you feel confident and comfortable in, that’s what always looks best on camera.
